Can one drive a car from the US to Rio de Janeiro? How are the roads?

Can one drive a car from the US to Rio de Janeiro? How are the roads?
Actually the Pan-American Highway runs from the US to Panama, but stops in a place called the Darien Gap, which is a protected wilderness area on the Panama-Colombia border. The only way get into Colombia in Panama is boat or air, unless you have a serious 4WD and are willing to break a number of local laws. Also, the area has a reputation for being home to many drug smuggling gangs, so not the safest way.

After Colombia, I believe it is possible (if difficult) to drive to Rio.
Can one drive a car from the US to Rio de Janeiro? How are the roads?
Uhhh.nope. Not unless someone has a car that can operate under water.
Uhhh.nope. Not unless someone has a car that can operate under water.
It is possible. The only problem is that you would have to drive through Colombia and (provided you survive that.) then through the Amazon basin. Many mountain roads are treacherous to say the least.
That's why there are airplanes, silly.
no.. i dont think so.. i'd say it would be dangerous.. i'm not.. but there might be a cap between continents.. maybe around panama ..

if you were really up to it.. u would have to do ALOT of research .. ! about all the countries you would have to go through.. the climites.. conditions.. conditions of the lands and/or roads. u'd have to go through the Andes Mountains.. and maybe the Amazon..

i really dont think its worth all the trouble ..

sidestep.com is the cheapest site i've found for international travel by plane

Boa Sorte
I've heard that once you get into central america.that's it for you. It's better to get a plane.

Can I fit carnaval 2007 in Salvador into my vacation?

Hi,
Simple question - I have off from Feb 10-18, 2007 for vacation from work, and I've always wanted to go to Salvador for carnaval. It looks like the main part of carnaval/ Mardi Gras day is Feb 20. How much action would be going on from Feb 11-17 (I live in atlanta, and all the flights I can afford take about a day each way, so I'm giving myself a day for travel on either side). So my question is : is enough going on to make it worth the money, or should I go some other time when I get to spend more of actual carnaval in Brazil. I've already been to salvador twice, so I wouldn't be going just to visit the city.
Can I fit carnaval 2007 in Salvador into my vacation?
Depends what kind of experience you want. Brazilians joke that Carnaval in Salvador starts in December, and things really heat up the week before, so your dates would be fine. Of course, if you go during another time, it will be cheaper. It all depends on your budget and your priorities.
Can I fit carnaval 2007 in Salvador into my vacation?
i dont know but count me in !!
i dont know but count me in !!
I would save your money, or plan to go to somewhere else in the area, not focusing on carnaval. The action happens on the 20th and the next few days, rather than the days before that.

You could instead do a trip further north and do an Amazon tour that perhaps even takes you into Venezuela.

But my choice would be go to Argentina and you could spend the entire week in Buneos Aires. It is an amazing city and you will have fun. Check out my Best Answers and you can get some other ideas about things to do in Argentina and Brasil.

Have a great trip wherever you go.

    Brazilian Girls?

I heard a lot about brazilian Girls. Can u tell me more details why they are so famous like this
    Brazilian Girls?
At first, it's hard to say something about Brazilians because in Brazil there are so many 'kinds' of people, there are whites, blacks, mixed people, Japanese, Chinese, Lebanese, Arabs.
so there isn't a real look that match with mostly Brazilians
The thing that i think that makes the difference is the great number of extrovert girls, but I'm not sure
and just one more thing, if you are another who thinks that every Brazilian girl is *, don't think, it's not true ;D

Is there such a thing as traditional American clothes?

    In a sense, there is.

That's the same with Brazil. How people dress there everyday.

You'll find traditional clothes of ethnic and cultural groups around the country, but such a thing as the genuine Brazilian traditional attire simply doesn't exist.

I think thats amazing that you live there! do you wear havaianas rubber flip flops? I love them!
    Beaches all the way!
Mountains, I live in Fl, USA, I miss mountains and i've had enough of beaches
When I was a teen I wanted the Beaches. When I was in love I wanted the Mountains and now that I have a family I love camping in the forest.
do something that you cant do on a usual basis. If you live at the beach then go to the mountians and vice versa.
I love camping on the beach.
    Most defiantly beaches (LA) preferably.
    forests, for the shade
For summer, I'd say the beach. Although mountains are a really nice get away.

    <3,
Why not just have them all? Here in california you can see it all and do it all, its the only state that you can be in the desert and then drive a few hours and be way up in the mountains and freeze ur * off, and drive to the beach to surf all in the same day..Personally if i had to choose just one.hmm i dunno..depends on who youre vacationing with
i love the mountains, great views and fresh air
being from the north there's nothing like a nice hot beach compared to our winter snow

    are you from brazil?
Be prepared for the festivals, street food, street dances and Brazilian styled lifestyle. Brazil's amazingly beautiful and is the fifth largest country in the world. So, you know why Brazil's exquisite. The beautiful white sandy beaches, women, Copacabana, Rio fests in Rio De Janeiro, Brasilia, Sao Paulo will be worth a visit. Travel around the Amazon river and see the lifestyles of ethnic Indian tribes living there away from the pollution, crowd and traffic jams. Relax in Rio, party in Brasilia and Sao Paulo. These are the three best cities. So, goodluck on travelling to Brazil and having heeps of excitement!
    are you from brazil?
watch out for the chicks dude!!they can be very attractive!!lol
watch out for the chicks dude!!they can be very attractive!!lol
well, be prepared to see a beautiful city with a lot of dangerous ghettos around, those are called Favelas and I would recommend you not to drive there, traffic in Rio is just insane, it's both ofensive and defensive and it stresses you out, believe me.
I'm from Brazil and honestly if I could I would remond everyone to go to a different part of Brazil, there are so many beautiful places besides Rio. like Salvador, Recife, Fernando de Noronha. etc.
    anyway, be safe.
Hang around with cool "cariocas" and you'll be fine. Street life, beaches, good places to eat, museums, nature at its best, pretty girls, boys. whatever u like, favelas, good weather, it can all be real cool.

I think so and This is your first question!! And I am your first answerer? YEAH!!
    Unfortunately, yes, they are.
If you are planning a trip to Brazil, try to avoid Sao Paulo. I would recommend the beaches of the northeast.
There are no riots in the streets, but in some prisons. And some attacks against the police in Sao Paulo.
    Only if you come
Just in a few cities. There is not riot in our streets. It's like I ask you if US is safe now, after the terrorist attacks. In the city where I live, I can walk safe at night. These riots are a few situations. TV and newspapers make it bigger than it really is. Sorry for my bad english.

Are Brazilian women easy to talk if you are from the US?

Are Brazilian women easy to talk if you are from the US?
I suppose you want to *talk them into something*, right? Most Latin American women like to ave a go at gringos because:
    a) It's a carefree relationship (they'll never again see you after tonight)
    b) You could give them some cool gift, treat them to some top place or even give them cash
If they're gonna get laid anyhow, might as well make the best out of it!
Are Brazilian women easy to talk if you are from the US?
Hell yeah. Just pick up a little phrase book and learn the basics, like Oy! and voce e bonita.
Hell yeah. Just pick up a little phrase book and learn the basics, like Oy! and voce e bonita.
Depends of which part of Brazil you are thinking of, in Bahia, girls are more free to talk to gringos. But in general they feel great about foreigners.
Commonly, VERY easy. But be careful with the facility.

When I travel to Brasil I will be doing some research. This will require some help. I can exchange your own cottage to stay in if you ever plan to travel to Maui.

Eu tenho um projeto de pesquisa. Uma troca ou a outra compensa??o s?o muito bem. Pode oferecer-lhe uma casa para uma visita se você viajar a Hawaii.

I spent 3 months in Rio de Janeiro 14 years ago when I adopted my daughter. It's a beautiful city. See the Cristo, Pau de Azucar & go to Itaipu or Niteroi beaches (hang w/the locals -- it's safer)

Anyone been to Salvador in Brazil. What's it like - beaches, people, cost of hotels etc. Found a cheap flight.
Best place on earth. But them I was born and raised there :)

Salvador is a wonderful place to visit. Most places should be pretty cheap right now since this is not high season. Try to search for "pousadas" they are like bed and breakfast places and a little better priced then hotels. Location is key in Salvador. Try to stay in "Rio Vermelho" since it is the only good bairro that close to everywhere.

anyhow nice place to retire lots of young hot looking chicks there to be able to have a different lass every night.sounds good huh??
Anyone americans ever been to chile, I'm in my mid-thirties and thinking about retiring there. How is it?
Due to the Bush's you might be dying of thirst there. They're about to destroy glaciers there (for gold, oil, etc.), which otherwise would provide water for generations. Retire there? I'd go there to start a "green" rebellion!
Check Google: "glaciers destroyed in chile"
Why Chile; Have you consider any other S. Am. countries, Brasil for example. That′s where i′ve lived for the past 2 years, but of course, i have my personal reasons to be here. Yours may be different. I live near the very expensive tourist areas, beaches.but in the more economical section.well, like i said, everyones reason are different. Wish you the best.

  • Any tips on travelling from Belem to Manaus and on to Porto Velho by river please?

Looking at making this trip in September only have a few weeks to complete the trip and would like to get as much from this as possible. Any hints or Do's and Don't's would be appreciated.
Any tips on travelling from Belem to Manaus and on to Porto Velho by river please?
Wow, that is a trip even many Brazilians would be wary of.Take yellow fever vaccination, bring malaria tablets and bring loads of insect repellent for starters. Since you are travelling by river the best is to rely on locals, making sure they have the permits (there have been incidents of illegal overcrowded ferries sinking).

Here is the National Tourism agency website:
    http://www.braziltour.com/site/gb/cidades/materia.php?id_cidade=7410
Any tips on travelling from Belem to Manaus and on to Porto Velho by river please?
Do stay in the porto velho, don't drift out to sea. You'll end up bobbing on the ocean. Sharks.
Do stay in the porto velho, don't drift out to sea. You'll end up bobbing on the ocean. Sharks.
I discourage you to swim it all the way, I'd use a boat of some sort
Go down to the port and ask when the next boat to Manaus is leaving. You might have to wait a day or two. My boat was working with only one motor when I made the trip so it took 7 days instead of 5 and often had to travel on the side of the river where the current was less strong (it RAINED bugs in the evening). Bring a hammock with you to string up with everyone else! It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life! I loved it. Bring some food too (esp fruit, on my boat same predictable orange food every day- spaghetti, rice, feijao) and a pack of cards or something. Boa viajem ;)

    Brazilian Girls?

Brazil does not have the highest rate of aids in the western..

I think thats amazing that you live there! do you wear havaianas rubber flip flops? I love them!

    Hello there,

All the beaches listed in there are really beatutiful, but there are two that should be incorporated to that.
Trancoso and Morro de Sao Paulo, there in Bahia State, the best two beaches that I've been in Brazil, and seen most of that list.

    Good Luck

Hi I am planning to go to Brazil, rio de janeiro. But am not sure what to expect so I would like to ask someone who lives there what i is like and what I should be prepared for and watch out for
    are you from brazil?

Are they still rioting in the streets of Brazil?
Yes in S?o Paulo they are still having gang wars between the cops. its a shame that people have to live in horror.
Are they still rioting in the streets of Brazil?
I think so and This is your first question!! And I am your first answerer? YEAH!!

Are there any organisations or companies that organise 'mineral' or 'geological' trips to Brazil?

I want to go dig myself some amethyst in a brazilian mine if possible.
I also realize that most mines are probably not set up to receive tourist with their picks but thought someone might know if there are 'adventure' style organised holidays where this would be part of the itenary. Or would it be something that i could organise myself once in Brazil? Any info appreciated.

I had never heard of "geoecotourism" until today! (thanks for the learning opportunity, hehe)

There actually is an organization in Brazil that promotes those trips. Their site is in Portuguese, but you can get in contact with them and ask them about their Geoecotourism Program:

Departamento de Gest?o Territorial – DEGET (Department of Territory Management of the Brazilian Geological Service)

    Brazilian Girls?
    yes

    Brazil clothes?
Is there such a thing as traditional American clothes?

    In a sense, there is.

That's the same with Brazil. How people dress there everyday.

You'll find traditional clothes of ethnic and cultural groups around the country, but such a thing as the genuine Brazilian traditional attire simply doesn't exist.

You could try this out, but the list won't be complete. Search Yahoo! Images for (Brazil in Portuguese is Brasil):

Does anyone know of a good airline that flyes to Rio de Janeiro - Brazil? Not cheap, GOOD.
Best airline to fly to Rio de Janeiro - Brazil?
I agree with the rest--avoid Varig. Even in first class they sucked. Plus they're practically bankrupt. Don't use air Paraguay either--ick. Any of the American Airlines are decent--I've used them all going to RIO, but American seems to be the best.

Beaches? Mountains? Or forests? What's the best for summer vacations?
